Chapter 8

When Jenner stepped onto the kitchen porch, Kellie was startled and then saw his face through the window, and she bolted outside. She immediately threw herself into his arms and gave him a big hug. “Are you okay?” she asked, smacking his arms and shoulders, stepping back to look at him anxiously. He was obviously surprised at her onslaught, but he replied willingly enough.

“I’m fine,” he said. “And, yes, I did find the War Dog. Thanks for asking.”

“Seriously?” she asked in delight.

“Yes, and it’s kind of a long story,” he noted. “I told the sheriff that you probably could identify the guy staying in Jim’s house.”

“So you did talk to the sheriff?”

“I did,” he confirmed. “Did you?”

“Sure. I answered his questions. I mean …” Then she hesitated. “Look. There’s never been a good rapport between us,” she admitted, “but I’ve tried to get along.”

“Since he is law enforcement, it’s always a good thing.”

She nodded. “The trouble is, … you know there’s some history.”

“Of course there is,” he agreed, “but history doesn’t mean that something like this gets pushed away.”

“He didn’t ask me if I could identify him. I assumed he already knew who he was.”

“I don’t think he has any clue,” Jenner stated.

She rolled her eyes at that. “Of course not. So, yeah, I probably should help him.” She stopped, frowned, and pointed to the front of her house. “I do have a security camera up front. Didn’t think of that. I probably have a picture of him.”

“That’s a good idea, and producing a photo of the guy could avoid you having to speak with the sheriff again. I can help you review your security tape, and together we’ll try to isolate and take a couple pictures of this squatter guy and send it to the sheriff.”

“Oh, I’m down for that,” she stated. And then she added, “Your girlfriend—ex-wife—came back again.”

“What did Laura want?” he asked calmly.

Kellie was glad to see that, outside of curiosity, there was no change in his expression. “Are you really over her?”

“I’m so over her,” he stated. “Why?”

“Just … just because she showed me a side of her personality that I actually struggled with today.”

“Yes, she has a bunch of those,” he noted. “I’m only just realizing how little I knew her myself.”

“I think she’s grown into certain aspects of her personality,” she explained cautiously, “and I don’t want to sound like a real bitch, but I’m not sure it’s to her benefit.”

“You mean, the fact that she’s pregnant and doesn’t want to be?”

“How did you know?” she asked, as she led the way back into the kitchen.

“She told me that she wasn’t interested in having kids for a very long time and then only if there was a damn good reason for it. She didn’t want to ruin her body.”

“Yeah, she sounds pretty irate over the whole thing right now too,” she agreed, “saying that she should have gotten a surrogate for it.”

“Yeah, that sounds like her,” he noted, with a nod. “We didn’t actually spend all that long together, and, when we did, we weren’t sharing our souls.
